Hinesburg Info > About Hinesburg,VT

The town of Hinesburg was chartered in 1792 and has a history that is rooted in farming and early water-powered manufacturing. Hinesburg's first land owners were farmers with names such as Burritt, Lawrence, Chaffee, Hull, Meacham, Tuttle, Partch, McEuen, Meech and Wilcox. Other early businesses often employed the power from the streams running out of the foothills to run their grist mills and sawmills. Some of today's businesses, such as Iroquois Manufacturing , still occupy locations that were used in the early years.

Today the village is still surrounded by open, green farmland along the LaPlatte River. In its compact six miles by six miles size, it encompasses great topographical variety from the floor of the Champlain Valley (below 400 feet) up to the rugged foothills of the Green Mountains at over 1,700 feet. Accessing this beautiful countryside is made easy by various recreational walking trail networks such as Geprags Park, Russell Family Trails, Fred Johnson Wildlife Management Area trails and more. These areas total nearly 2000 acres of open forested land that's open to the public.

With a population of about 4500 people, Hinesburg has three restaurants, two law firms, a dentist and family health center, hardware store, and numerous dairy farms. It has an active community, with many people participating in town government committees and forums. Children go to school at the town elementary school, located on the south side of the village, for grades 1 through 8, and then to Champlain Valley Union High School, located on the north side of the village.

It's location is convenient in virtually every direction when traveling to Burlington, South Burlington, Williston, Essex Junction, Richmond and parts south.  It combines the best of rural and small urban lifestyles and offers a community that welcomes a family wherever in Hinesburg they call home.
